Longest Korfball Marathon Guinness World Record™ Attempt.

It was the beginning of the 2006 -07 Korfball season, with a new Kingfisher committee nominated in and myself as chairperson. At one of the well supported social events Kingfisher hold during the year I blurted out a sentence that at the time would not realise what implications it would have to both club and individuals.

The sentence was “Why don’t we break a world record”

Applying to Guinness World Records of our attempt we found that the record already stood currently held by Vinken korfball Club from the Netherlands at 26hrs 2mins. A year in preparation Kingfisher Korfball were about to embark on breaking this record.

Each player had to raise money for this attempt to go ahead and for Kingfishers chosen charity, Kent Air Ambulance Trust to be legible to compete.

On the weekend of the 14th & 15th June 2008 at 07:00hrs a squad of Kingfisher players started their attempt to break the Guinness World Record™ for the Longest Korfball Marathon. The first goal being scored by Alex Mason for “Team Blue”, with a quick reply by “Team White” by Tom Woolmer, this the continued for the duration of the game with “Team White” taking the win at 476 – 471. During the weekend we were visited by the BBC & ITV who both filmed our attempt, we also were in contact with Radio 1 on an hourly basis as we neared the hour of breaking the world record. With over 300 people in the hall as we played through the current world record of 26 hours 2 minutes, the cheering and clapping was phenomenal as spurred the teams on for another 4 hours.

When I first decided to make an attempt of breaking a world record I had not envisaged how much work was involved in bringing the whole thing together and also how many people are required during the attempt. Without these people being here giving their free time up and especially during the weekend, the attempt would not have gone ahead. I would like to thank you all for your support and commitment in making this happen, be it a witness, steward, referee; a helper looking after the squad, the photography/video, your time is greatly appreciated.

A few people that do need a mention are my top team of Jackie Geddes, Phil Locke, Paul Spencer and Chris Mason whom have kept me sane during some difficult times. Last but by no means least a big thank you to St John Ambulance for medical cover over the duration of the event. Larkfield Leisure Centres management team and staff whom have been fully committed to making this event work from the start.  Thanks again Steve K

All the video footage and documentation was sent off to Guinness World Records and 3 week later we were officially given the title of Guinness World Record Holders –Longest Korfball Marathon 30 hours 2 minutes on the 14th & 15th June 2008 at Larkfield Leisure Centre.
