Our Club

Originally started in August 1980 Joy and Dave Glancey brought together some like-minded people to form what was known as C.S. Kingfisher. The C.S. was a reference to the Civil Service Club in Maidstone where Kingfisher would be based.

We came from two other clubs, Y Centre K.C. (previously Medvale K.C.) & Springfield K.C. plus a couple of new players. We were just eight people available to play, Joy & Dave Glancey, Howard & Lesley Crafter, Anderw Ruler, Barbara Stone, Barbara Whiteway & Brian Skinner.

Our first season was in the 3rd division outdoors. We finished that season with a 100% record, 91 goals for and 19 against. During the first year we gained a couple more players, Tania & Steve Kingsford. Within a few months we were able to start putting a second team together.

With the Kingfisher emphasis on youth we tried to form a junior team, the first in kent, Kwiek K.C. helped with some female players.

Kingfisher K.C. were one of the clubs involved at the start of the National League with two teams entered.

The success of our club was always youth development with a great social side which I hope will continue for a long, long time.

Here is a photo of the first Kingfisher team September 1980.

The clubs has a number of adult teams which play in three main competitions, those being:

English Korfball league (EKL)

Premier League – Kingfisher 1

South East Regional League (SERL)

Division 1 – Kingfisher 2

Kent Korfball Association (KKA)

League 1 – Kingfisher 2 & K-Kingfisher

League 2 – Warriors

Junior Teams

U9-Mono (4 on 4)

13 &16 – no teams at present

(please use contact form if interested).

We are always actively recruiting junior players to compete in the junior section of the KKA leagues, these range from U9 – U16 age groups. In the past Kingfisher have had a strong junior section, winning a number of Kent leagues and cups.

Kingfisher have a number of current and former players (now with other clubs) who represent England in the national squads at u16, u19, u21, u23 & seniors, this is a great honour both for the club and the players.

Kingfisher are a very sociable club and have regular get togethers outside of playing such as BBQ’s, presentation evenings and the very popular quiz night’s. We are based in the West Malling area, training at the Malling School (see the training tab) games are mostly played at local schools and the EKL games are played in the main at Medway Park Sports Complex, Gillingham Kent.

We are very proud to be in the Guinness World Records with the title of “The Longest Korfball Marathon” we played for 30hrs 2mins non-stop to break the previous record of 26hrs 2mins and to raise £5000 for Kent Air Ambulance. It was a great effort by all involved.

The club’s most recent achievement was to qualify for the International Korfball Federation (IKF) Europa Shield which was played in Barcelona, Spain. This is the first time in the clubs history that we have participated in this type of competition.

The competition took place in January at Villanova, Catalonia, Spain. Kingfisher was in a pool with teams from Portugal, Catalonia & Germany;

Portugal – Clube Carnaxide Cultura e Desporrto (CCCD)

Catalonia – Club Korfbal VALLPARDIS

Germany – KV Adler Rauxel

Kingfisher did themselves proud winning their final game, which was 7th/8th playoff in extra time with a ‘golden goal’. We also beat the defending champions along the way. The group of players, coaches and supporters had a great time and represented the club in a professional manner. It was a great experience and one we hope will be repeated in the future!

We are actively seeking new players, young and old, tall or short, fit or not, fun or serious, new or experienced. Please contact us and come along and try us out. We are as mentioned a fun but competitive club that like the social after korfball activities.

We are trying to follow our routes and continue to provide a good youth base. So if 6+ yrs then come and join us.
