Welcome to Korfball Korfball is a ball-handling sport played by two teams of eight players – four male four female. In the winter months it is played in sports halls and in summer it’s played outside on grass. For senior matches, the nationally recognized size of the pitch is 40x20 meters, although there are not too many halls of this size throughout the country, this means that most of the pitches are slightly smaller. Matches involving juniors are played on a smaller pitch and with a smaller ball (size 4). The pitch is divided in half, with four players of each team playing in each half of the pitch, one half attacking the other defending. A goal is scored by shooting through a wicker basket fixed to the top of a post, one in each half. The height of the post’s will depend on the age playing, for adults U19, U16 and U13 age groups this is 3.5 meters for the juniors U9’s this would be 2.5mtrs and U11 3.0mtrs. Unlike basketball and netball, the post is placed one third distance of each half inside the back base line facing towards the half-way line. Players therefore, are able to play around the post and shoot from behind. All four players in the attacking half of the pitch are able to shoot from anywhere within the half, play is very fluid as there are no set positions. After every two goals, regardless of who scores, players change zones (half’s) this means attackers become defenders and visa-versa. All players have the opportunity to play all the attacking & defending roles during the game. Players are not allowed to run with the ball and so there is a need for good special awareness and continuous movement off the ball to create shooting opportunities, and if defending to deny the opposition the opportunity to shoot.
